Professor Daniel Branch is a leading scholar in African History at the University of Warwick's Faculty of Arts, Department of History. He holds dual roles as Academic Director of the Doctoral College and Deputy Pro-Vice Chancellor for Africa. His research focuses on colonial and post-colonial Kenya, with expertise in decolonization, Cold War dynamics, and East African regionalism. Branch has authored seminal works including Defeating Mau Mau, Creating Kenya (2009) and Kenya: Between Hope and Despair (2011).
He previously held positions at the University of Exeter and Yale University, and completed his DPhil at Oxford. His current projects include co-authored works on East African regionalism (2025) and Tom Mboya's Cold War role (2025). Branch actively supervises PhD students researching Kenyan and East African history.
Branch also leads institutional initiatives like the Warwick Africa Hub and Global History and Culture Centre. His recent work addresses doctoral education equity through the MADE project (2024).
