Mutsuko Endo Hudson is a Professor of Linguistics and Japanese at Michigan State University (MSU), located within the Department of Linguistics, Languages, and Cultures in the College of Arts and Letters. Her research focuses on pragmatics, discourse, and functional grammar, analyzing spoken and written Japanese through historical, cognitive, and interactive lenses. She holds a Ph.D. and M.A. in Linguistics from the University of Michigan.
Her work spans edited volumes, co-authored textbooks, and contributions to linguistic journals. Notable publications include Pragmatics of Japanese (2018), Modern Japanese Grammar (2013), and Japanese/Korean Linguistics 13 (2008). She has received awards such as the Japanese Foreign Minister’s Certificate of Commendation (2004) and the MSU Teacher-Scholar Award (1993-94).
Dr. Hudson teaches Japanese language courses at all levels, linguistics, and pedagogical methods. She also contributes to the Master’s Program in Japanese Language Pedagogy at Columbia University. Her research emphasizes speaker-hearer dynamics, information status, and cultural context in language use.
