Murukeshan Vadakke Matham

Assoc. Prof. Murukeshan Vadakke Matham is an Associate Professor at the School of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering, Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore. He holds prestigious fellowships including Fellow of SPIE, Optica, and the Institute of Physics (FInstP), along with the Erudite Professorship (2011). His research focuses on Nanoscale Optics, Biomedical Optics, and Applied Optics for Metrology, with over 200 international journal publications, 175 conference presentations, and 23 patents. He leads the Centre for Optical & Laser Engineering (COLE) and is Deputy Director of The Photonics Institute (TPI), NTU.

• Education: Ph.D. (Applied Optics) from IIT Madras (1997), M.Phil. & M.Sc. (Physics) from Cochin University of Science and Technology, India.
• Awards: Over 20 international recognitions, including SPIE Fellow status and the 2011 Erudite Professorship.
• Grants: Secured >SGD 10M as PI in projects like optical metrology (Rolls Royce), solar energy (MOE), and ocular imaging (NMRC).
• Collaborations: With institutions like UC Davis (USA), Toyo University (Japan), and Singapore Eye Research Institute (SERI).
• Labs: Director of COLE and Deputy Director of TPI, NTU.

Research Interests: Pioneering work in optical imaging at macro-to-nanoscale, plasmonics, and biomedical probes. Current projects include hydroponic crop monitoring, random lasing for tumor detection, and graphene-based optical systems.

Teaching & Mentorship: Supervised 25 PhD and 4 Master’s students, currently guiding 3 PhD candidates. Regular lecturer in SPIE’s Visiting Lecturer Program.
