- Hons. B.A., University of Western Ontario
Research Interests: Clarke's work centers on Contemporary Epistemology and Experimental Epistemology, with significant contributions to Tracking Theories of Knowledge and analyses of empirical psychology's impact on epistemological frameworks. His investigations extend to Philosophy of Mind, Philosophy of Psychology, and Cognitive Science, examining rationality, natural inferential capacities, concept formation, and cognitive architecture, while maintaining strong engagement with History and Philosophy of Science.
Publication Trends: His recent articles (2010-2024) demonstrate sustained focus on resolving epistemic paradoxes like the backward clock problem through tracking theories, with increasing collaboration (notably with F. Adams and J.A. Barker). Work appears consistently in top philosophy journals including Logos and Episteme and Synthese, reflecting deep integration of cognitive science methodologies into traditional epistemological inquiry.
Scientific Awards:
- Honourable Mention for the William James Prize of the American Psychological Association (2005)
Grants and Mentorship: Funded by SSHRC and FQRSC grants, Clarke has delivered 94 international presentations. As former Graduate Program Director and instructor of advanced seminars (PHIL 463/634, PHIL 465/643), he actively mentors graduate students despite no publicly listed advisees. His book Reconstructing Reason and Representation (MIT Press, 2004/2022) remains influential.
Research Collaborations: Clark is a core member of the FQRSC-funded Groupe de recherche interuniversitaire sur la normativite (GRIN), led by Professor Aude Bandini at Université de Montréal, facilitating cross-institutional research on normative frameworks in philosophy and cognitive science.
