David Matheson is an Associate Professor at Carleton University’s Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Department of Philosophy. His work bridges two core areas: the philosophy of life and epistemology.
Education

Research Interests
His philosophy of life research focuses on naturalistic meaning, multiple forms of meaning realization, creativity’s role in meaning, and responses to existential pessimism. In epistemology, he explores testimony as a knowledge source, epistemic values, and ethical dimensions of knowledge and ignorance.
Recent Publications Trends
2024 articles examine religious meaning, evil’s impact on life purpose, and perfectionism in value theory. Earlier works analyze pleasure, forgetting ethics, testimonial reasoning, and epistemic pluralism.
Teaching & Office Hours
In Fall 2025, he teaches PHIL 2010: Issues in Theoretical Philosophy and PHIL 5850: Proseminar. Office hours are Tuesdays & Thursdays, 12–1 PM in Paterson Hall 3A49, or by appointment.
