Murat Günel is the Sterling Professor of Neurosurgery and Professor of Genetics and Neuroscience at Yale School of Medicine. As Chair of Neurosurgery and Neurosurgeon-in-Chief of Yale New Haven Health System, he leads clinical and research programs in complex cranial neurosurgery, neurogenetics, and brain tumor research. His work integrates molecular genetics with clinical practice to address disorders of brain development, vascular function, and tumor biology.
- Educations: MD from Istanbul University (1991), neurosurgical residency and internship at Yale-New Haven Hospital (1992–1998)
His research focuses on genetic and epigenetic mechanisms underlying neurodevelopmental disorders (e.g., lissencephaly via WDR62 mutations), meningioma subtypes (TRAF7/AKT1/SOX17), and intracranial aneurysms (EDNRA/SOX17). He co-directs the Yale Program on Neurogenetics and directs the Brain Tumor Research Program.
Key contributions include identifying mTOR pathway dysregulation as a therapeutic target for lissencephaly and discovering genomic drivers of meningiomas/aneurysms. His work bridges imaging, genetics, and neuromodulation for autism and brain tumors.
- Awards: National Academy of Medicine (2015), Ralph G. Dacey Medal (2022)
Labs/Teams: Gunel Lab, Yale Program on Neurogenetics, Yale Program in Brain Tumor Research.
