Munmun De Choudhury

Munmun De Choudhury is an Associate Professor at the School of Interactive Computing, Georgia Institute of Technology, and Co-Lead of the Patient-Centered Care Delivery research pillar at the Children's Healthcare of Atlanta Pediatric Technology Center. She holds affiliations with the Institute for People and Technology (IPaT), Machine Learning Center (ML@GT), Institute for Data Engineering and Science (IDEaS), and Petit Institute for Bioengineering and Bioscience (IBB). Her research focuses on computational social science, leveraging social media data to study human well-being, mental health, and societal dynamics. A key area of her work involves developing computational tools for mental health intervention and public health policy.

De Choudhury’s research integrates computer science with psychology, sociology, and medicine. She pioneered computational methods to analyze social media for mental health insights, leading to collaborations with the CDC, UN Foundation, and WHO. Her work has influenced policy, including contributions to the U.S. Surgeon General’s Advisory on Social Connection and the WHO’s Commission for Social Connection.

Her awards include the 2023 SIGCHI Societal Impact Award, multiple best paper awards, and induction into the SIGCHI Academy. She directs the SocWeB Lab, which studies ethical uses of social media data for societal benefit. Over $42M in grants fund her research, supported by NIH, NSF, CDC, and industry partners like Microsoft and Instagram.

De Choudhury teaches courses on social computing and ethics, emphasizing responsible AI and data practices. Her leadership roles include advisory boards for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and the International Society for Computational Social Science.
