Dr. Munkit Choy serves as an Honorary Senior Research Fellow in the Division of Cardiovascular Sciences, focusing on mechanisms regulating cardiac development and function through non-coding RNAs, chromosomal interactions, and epigenetics. His expertise contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to health and innovation.
Education: BSc (Genetics & Molecular Biology) and MSc (Human Molecular Genetics) from University of Malaya, followed by a PhD (Molecular Genetics/Biology) from the University of Cambridge. He holds external roles as a Life Member at Clare Hall, Cambridge, and an International Collaborative Partner at UTAR.
Research interests emphasize epigenetic regulation in cardiovascular systems, with studies on long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs), promoter interactions, and genome-wide association analyses. Notable work includes investigating STX18-AS1 lncRNA's role in cardiomyocyte differentiation and identifying neuroplastin (NPTN) as a novel gene influencing heart rate.
Publications span 2021–2024, addressing cardiac organoid applications, genetic mechanisms of heart defects, and epigenetic modulation in stem cells. Awards include the 2022 Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
Collaborations involve institutions globally, focusing on translational cardiovascular research. Current work integrates genomic and molecular approaches to advance cardiac disease modeling and therapeutic strategies.
