Muhammet Vefa Akpinar

Muhammet Vefa Akpinar is a Professor in the Civil Engineering Department of Karadeniz Technical University's Faculty of Engineering, specializing in transportation and geotechnical engineering. He leads Turkey's only Accelerated Pavement Testing Program—one of Europe's most comprehensive—and conducts forensic investigations for the Turkish Highway General Office (TCK) to diagnose pavement failures in Trabzon.

His research centers on pavement mechanics, advanced modeling, nondestructive evaluation, and full-scale accelerated testing. Key innovations include geocell reinforcement systems for weak base layers and a novel device for geogrid performance evaluation (TUBITAK Project 106M423). His work integrates field instrumentation, mechanistic design procedures, and pavement deterioration modeling to address real-world infrastructure challenges.

Prof. Akpinar has advised 35 theses and secured major funding from TUBITAK and the Turkish National Science Foundation. He currently develops pavement deterioration curves using the Flexible Pavement DataBase and implements accelerated testing protocols into TCK's highway design systems. His laboratory features pressure/strain gage systems for evaluating geocell-reinforced pavement layer bearing capacity.
