Dr. Muhammad Gholnecsar E. is the John Corbally Endowed Professor of Literacy, Language, and Culture at the University of Illinois at Chicago’s College of Education. He previously served as a classroom teacher, literacy specialist, school administrator, and school board president. His research focuses on Black historical excellence in education, culturally and historically responsive pedagogy, and curriculum reform. His model, the Culturally and Historically Responsive Education (CHRE), is implemented in thousands of U.S. and Canadian schools. He leads a federal grant from the U.S. Department of Education to study culturally responsive literacy in STEM classrooms.
Key contributions include authoring best-selling books Cultivating Genius, Unearthing Joy, and co-authoring Black Girls’ Literacies. His scholarship appears in journals like Research in the Teaching of English and Urban Education. Recognitions include the 2020 AERA Early Career Award and consecutive top 1% Edu-Scholar Public Influencer rankings (2022–2025).
