Dr Muhammad Azmi Abdul Wahab is a Senior Research Scientist and Research Team Leader at the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS), focusing on Coral Reproduction and Aquaculture. He holds a PhD in Aquaculture (2015) and a Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Aquaculture (2010) from James Cook University. His research spans over a decade, addressing ecological and environmental processes affecting marine invertebrates, particularly corals and sponges.
Key research areas include taxonomy/systematics, biodiversity, larval ecology, coral aquaculture, and reef restoration. He leads projects such as the Reef Restoration and Adaptation Program and has contributed to understanding filter feeder responses to dredging. Collaborations include AIMS@JCU, WAMSI, and global institutions.
His work emphasizes coral propagation, settlement mechanisms, and the impacts of environmental stressors. He developed the AutoSpawner system for ex situ coral spawning, advancing reef restoration tools. Articles highlight topics like sponge biodiversity, coral larval behavior, and biofilm effects.
Dr Wahab’s expertise bridges ecological studies and applied solutions for marine conservation, with a focus on sustaining coral reef ecosystems amid climate change and human impacts.
