Andrea Muehlebach is Professor of Maritime Anthropology and Cultures of Water at the Department of Anthropology and Cultural Research, University of Bremen, Germany. Prior to this, she held academic positions at the University of Toronto (2008-2021) and the University of Chicago (2007-2008). Her work intersects anthropology, political economy, and ethics, focusing on neoliberalism, water governance, and public institutions.

Her research explores the politics and ethics of economic life under neoliberal conditions. Her first book, The Moral Neoliberal: Welfare and Citizenship in Italy (2012), examined neoliberal welfare reforms and their moral implications. Her second book, A Vital Politics: Water Insurgencies in Europe (2023), analyzes water financialization and re-municipalization struggles in austerity-era Europe. She is currently writing a trade book on the "Rights of Nature" for Penguin Press.
Andrea Muehlebach has received multiple honors, including Dean’s Excellence Awards (2017, 2014), the Sol Tax Dissertation Prize (2008), and recognition for her scholarship. She served on the Executive Board of the Society for Cultural Anthropology (2017-2022) and contributes to editorial boards of leading journals.
