Mostafa Rateb

Mostafa Rateb is a Professor at the University of the West of Scotland, School of Computing, Engineering and Physical Sciences. He is currently accepting PhD students and has been recognized with the Principal’s Certificate of Excellence Award for Research & Engagement (University of Aberdeen, 2019) and the UWS Star Award for Research and Enterprise (2020).

Rateb's research focuses on drug discovery from natural sources, particularly from hyper-arid desert actinomycetes and marine endophytic fungi. His work involves:

• Structure elucidation of natural products using NMR and high-resolution MS
• Microbial co-culture for novel secondary metabolite production
• GCMS analysis of microbial volatile compounds
• Chromatographic purification (HPLC, VLC, SEC, SPE, flash)
• Antimicrobial and anticancer testing of isolated compounds
• Computational molecular modeling for target identification

His research output spans 172 publications with specialized focus areas in secondary metabolites (100%), anti-infective agents (92%), and Streptomyces (85%). Recent article trends show significant contributions to antimicrobial discovery, cancer therapy development, and computational drug modeling with applications against SARS-CoV-2 (91% research focus) and multi-drug resistant pathogens (85% research focus).
