Mostafa Ghanem

Mostafa Ghanem is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Maryland, College Park, and affiliated with the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine. His research focuses on advanced molecular diagnostics and epidemiology of bacterial pathogens.

His work develops next-generation sequencing-based tools like cgMLST for Avian Mycoplasma and foodborne pathogens, emphasizing outbreak investigation and disease control through collaborations with state labs and federal agencies.

Scientific contributions include standardized Mycoplasma gallisepticum and Mycoplasma synoviae typing schemes. He holds two invention reports and has received prestigious awards such as the 2017 Reed Rumsey Award and P.P. Levine Award.

He leads the Molecular Epidemiology Laboratory, which provides typing services and collaborates with poultry stakeholders. His extension program communicates research findings to policymakers and practitioners.
