Mortini Pietro is a Full Professor of Neurosurgery at Vita-Salute San Raffaele University School of Medicine in Milan, where he has served as Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery and Radiosurgery since 2008. He also holds a Clinical Professor position at The George Washington University Neurological Institute since 2007. His extensive clinical practice includes over 6,900 surgical procedures, primarily focused on skull base, brain and spine tumors, and cerebrovascular disorders.
His educational background includes a First Class medical degree Cum Laude (1986), Specialty in Neurological Surgery with top marks from University of Verona (1991), and Specialty in ENT Surgery with top marks from University of Milan (2000). He completed his neurosurgical residency at University of Verona (1986-1991).
Professor Mortini's research spans multiple cutting-edge areas including spinal cord injury treatments using olfactory cell transplantation and collagen scaffolds, pituitary tumor pathology, and skull base chordoma cytogenetics. His current experimental work focuses on applications of collagen scaffolds for nervous system injuries through collaborations with Harvard Medical School, MIT, and University of Lecce.
His recent publications (2024-2025) demonstrate strong focus on spinal cord stimulation therapies, glioblastoma immunology, and advanced radiosurgical techniques for pituitary tumors. These works appear in high-impact journals including Science Translational Medicine, Critical Reviews in Oncology Hematology, and Journal of Neuro-Oncology.
His scientific recognition includes:

- Member of The Pituitary Society Advisory Board (2020-present)
- Former Fellow of Italian Skull Base Society (1998-2005)
Professor Mortini actively mentors through his role as Director of the Residency Program in Neurosurgery at Vita-Salute San Raffaele University (since 2008) and has organized over 45 post-graduate courses internationally. He collaborates extensively with research units including the Max Planck Institute for Psychiatry in Munich, Institute of Medical Genetics at University of Milan, and Department of Maxillo-Facial Surgery.
His laboratory work centers on the Unit of Experimental Neurosurgery, where he leads pre-clinical studies on olfactory cell transplantation and collagen scaffold applications for nervous system injuries. He also directs the International University Master in Radiosurgery program and serves on multiple international cooperation commissions.
