- Master's degree in Sports Science from the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences
- PhD completed in 2020 with thesis: 'Anti-doping as solidarity: A philosophical inquiry into anti-doping in elite sport'
Sandvik's research focuses on the philosophical and sociological dimensions of sports, with particular emphasis on anti-doping ethics, environmental issues in sports organizations, and inclusion in sports. His work employs both theoretical frameworks from philosophy and empirical approaches from sociology to address complex issues at the intersection of sports, ethics, and society. He has developed a distinctive approach examining how philosophical concepts like solidarity, narrative identity, and moral frameworks apply to contemporary sports challenges.
Analysis of Sandvik's publication record reveals a clear trajectory from foundational work on anti-doping ethics to broader social issues in sports. His early research focused primarily on philosophical approaches to doping, while his more recent work has expanded to address climate action in sports, inclusion policies, and coaching ethics. This evolution demonstrates how philosophical inquiry can inform practical applications in sports governance and policy. His publications span multiple disciplines including philosophy, sociology, environmental studies, and gender studies, reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of contemporary sports research.
Sandvik's contributions to sports research include significant work on how sports organizations frame environmental issues, the ethical dimensions of coaching behaviors, and participation patterns in youth sports. His research has practical implications for sports policy development, coach education, and organizational practices in sports federations and clubs.
Sandvik actively collaborates with researchers across institutions, including notable partnerships with Gerd Marie Solstad, Ørnulf Seippel, and other scholars at NIH and NOVA/OsloMet. His work on the 'Sports for All in Oslo' project demonstrates his commitment to translating research into practical initiatives that promote accessibility and inclusion in community sports.
