Morten Halle is an Associate Professor in the Department of Improvised Music, Jazz and Folk Music at the Norwegian Academy of Music since 2005, previously serving as Vice Rector (2017-2022) and Head of Section (2008-2017). A saxophonist and composer active since the late 1970s, he has recorded hundreds of albums and toured internationally with ensembles like Jon Balke's Magnetic North Orchestra and Geir Lysne's Listening Ensemble, collaborating with artists including Sissel Kyrkjebø and Sinikka Langeland.
Halle holds an intermediate degree in musicology from the University of Oslo (1979). His artistic leadership spans projects such as Into the wild hills, Halles Komet, and Metropolitan, while his organizational roles include chairing TONO (2002-2004) and board positions at the Norwegian Jazz Musicians Association and Norwegian Jazz Forum.
Halle's research integrates performance practice with pedagogical innovation, focusing on jazz saxophone, cross-genre experimentation, and large ensemble teaching methodologies. His work bridges composition, music production, and educational frameworks for improvisation-based disciplines, emphasizing practical application in contemporary music contexts.
His scholarly publications reveal consistent engagement with jazz education evolution, particularly in developing pedagogical approaches for large ensembles (2022) and cross-genre practice methodologies (2015), while maintaining active performance output through concert documentation (2024) that demonstrates applied research in real-world settings.
Halle's accolades include the Hedda Award for best audio-visual performance (2017) for 'Rekyl', alongside State Work Grants recognizing both his musical and compositional contributions. These awards highlight his dual impact as performer and creator in Norway's cultural landscape.
As an educator, Halle mentors students through projects like 'Coaching in main instrument teaching' (2015-2017) and 'Over the edge of the stage' (2017), developing frameworks for instrumental pedagogy and stage presence within CEMPE (Centre for Excellence in Music Performance Education). His sustained freelance career since 1978 provides authentic industry context for student development.
Halle currently leads artistic collectives including Into the wild hills (with Helge Lien and Gunnar Halle), the KU project 'Da og nå' featuring 20 duo recordings, and the Morten Halle/Carlo Morena Duo, demonstrating continuous innovation in collaborative music-making across institutional and freelance contexts.
