Morrow H. Baker is a Professor of Practice at the University of New Mexico (UNM), affiliated with the School of Architecture + Planning and the Department of Landscape Architecture. He holds an MA in Comparative Literature and Postmodern Design from UNM, and a BA in Latin American Studies, History, and English. A licensed landscape architect since 1985, he founded Morrow Reardon Wilkinson Miller, Ltd., New Mexico’s first modern landscape architecture firm, in 1973. He has been teaching at UNM since 1975 and established the Master’s Program in Landscape Architecture in 2000.
His research focuses on Southwestern plant materials, New Mexico’s historic landscapes, Latin American landscape architecture, and early Spanish literature. He directs the Registry of Historic Landscapes (New Mexico) and has authored 11 books, including award-winning works on regional flora and indigenous design. His design projects span over 4,500 projects, including major works like the renovation of Santa Fe Plaza and urban revitalization initiatives across New Mexico.
Baker has received prestigious awards such as the Stewart Udall Cultural Landscape Preservation Award (2008) and the Zia Award (2012). He serves on multiple academic and professional boards, including the UNM Press Committee and the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) NM Chapter. His contributions bridge academic research, professional practice, and cultural preservation, emphasizing New Mexico’s unique heritage.
