Associate Professor Morris Low is a distinguished scholar of Japanese history at the University of Queensland's School of Historical and Philosophical Inquiry within the Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences. He serves as Chief Examiner and has established himself as a leading expert in the history of Japanese science and technology, Australia-Japan relations, and Japanese visual culture. His research has been consistently productive throughout his academic career, with numerous publications spanning decades.
Dr. Low's research interests focus on the history of Japanese science and technology, Australia-Japan relations, Japanese visual culture, and issues of identity. His current projects specifically examine the history of nuclear power in Japan and Japan's participation in international expositions and Olympic Games. His scholarly output reveals a consistent pattern of exploring how science, technology, and visual representations have shaped Japanese society and its international relations.
His extensive publication record includes 10 books, 39 book chapters, 96 journal articles, and numerous other scholarly outputs totaling 162 works. His most recent research demonstrates a particular focus on nuclear culture in Japan, as evidenced by his 2020 book 'Visualizing nuclear power in Japan: a trip to the reactor' and related articles examining World's Fairs and atomic energy exhibitions. His work on Japan's participation in international events, particularly the Olympics, shows his interest in how Japan has presented itself to the world through major international platforms.
Dr. Low has served as Editor of the East Asia Series of research monographs published by Routledge for the Asian Studies Association of Australia (ASAA). From September 2011 through to the end of 2012, he was Acting Head of the School of Languages and Comparative Cultural Studies at UQ. For several years, he held the position of Adjunct Associate Professor at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, USA, demonstrating his international scholarly connections.
His supervision record shows he has mentored numerous PhD students across diverse topics including Chinese-Australian history, Japanese visual culture, gender studies, and cross-border trade networks.
