Dr. Morris B Goldman is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine. With over four decades of clinical and research experience, he specializes in severe mental illnesses, particularly psychosis, and has developed innovative approaches to early intervention and recovery. His work bridges clinical psychiatry, neuroscience, and endocrinology, with a focus on understanding the biological mechanisms underlying psychotic disorders.
Dr. Goldman received his MD from the University of Pennsylvania in 1980 and completed his psychiatry residency at the University of Chicago Hospitals in 1984. He is board certified in Psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
Dr. Goldman's research spans several interconnected areas focused on severe mental illness. His early work examined the life-threatening water imbalance (polydipsia and hyponatremia) in chronic psychotic patients, leading to a NIH-sponsored fellowship in neuroendocrinology. He discovered a plausible mechanism involving disruption of anterior hippocampal regulation of hypothalamic-mediated neuroendocrine responses. More recently, he has focused on prepulse inhibition as a biomarker of schizophrenia and developed transcranial magnetic stimulation approaches to enhance this neural function. His clinical research has centered on early intervention for psychosis, culminating in the development of the Recovery from Early Psychosis Program (REPP), which takes a strength-based, developmentally-focused approach that has shown significantly better outcomes than standard early intervention services.
Dr. Goldman's publication record demonstrates a consistent focus on understanding the biological mechanisms of psychosis while developing practical clinical interventions. His work bridges basic neuroscience with clinical application, particularly in water imbalance disorders among psychotic patients and the development of the REPP model for early psychosis intervention. His research shows an evolution from basic pathophysiological studies toward more applied clinical interventions that address the developmental needs of young people experiencing first-episode psychosis.

His Recovery from Early Psychosis Program (REPP) has received significant philanthropic support, allowing for the development of innovative strength-based, developmentally-focused interventions that have shown remarkable success in helping young people recover from first-episode psychosis. The program's emphasis on peer support, occupational therapy, and personalized recovery planning represents a significant departure from traditional approaches to early psychosis intervention.
Dr. Goldman leads the Recovery from Early Psychosis Program (REPP) at Northwestern, which has grown substantially since its inception in 2017. The program now includes a multidisciplinary team of psychiatrists, social workers, occupational therapists, peer supporters, and researchers. REPP collaborates with the Focus Forward (F2) program, which promotes competitive employment and academic reintegration for patients. The program has developed innovative approaches including cognitive remediation through Brain HQ, group-based resiliency training, narrative and storytelling groups, and community-based activities to support recovery.
