Morgan Opie is a Hedrick Assistant Adjunct Professor and NSF Postdoc at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). She holds a PhD from Harvard University, where she worked with Michael J. Hopkins, and completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and Cape Cod Community College. Her research focuses on homotopy theory and its applications to geometry, topology, and algebraic geometry, including vector bundle classification, motivic homotopy theory, and abstract homotopy methods.
Her academic career includes teaching roles such as Liggett Instructor Award-winning instruction in linear algebra and topology courses at UCLA, and pedagogical fellowships at Harvard. She has organized the MIT Talbot Workshop and contributed to collaborative projects like the Women in Topology III conference. Her work spans theoretical developments in homotopy theory and categorical frameworks, with a particular emphasis on interdisciplinary applications.
Key research themes include unstable vector bundles, motivic invariants, and homotopy-theoretic approaches to algebraic geometry. Recent publications address classification problems for vector bundles, digraph homology, and categorical methods in topology. She actively engages in academic communities, presenting at conferences like the Newton Institute workshops and the Cascade Topology Seminar.
