Morgan Carr-Markell is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biology at Saint Mary’s College in Notre Dame, Indiana. Their research focuses on honey bee foraging behavior and communication, particularly the waggle dance, and extends to pollinator conservation and social insect biology. They teach courses including Insects and Society, Foundations of Ecology, and Programming for Biologists, emphasizing inclusivity in both teaching and research environments.
Education:
- PhD, University of Minnesota
- MS, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
- BA, Wellesley College
Research Interests: Carr-Markell’s work examines how honey bees communicate floral resource locations through waggle dances, with applications to pollinator conservation. They study foraging preferences, social insect behavior, and the ecological roles of honey bees in native habitats. Recent projects include validating waggle dance mapping techniques and exploring recruitment to native prairie plants.
Professional Affiliations:
- Entomological Society of America
- Animal Behavior Society
- International Union for the Study of Social Insects
- American Association of Professional Apiculturalists
Labs/Teams: Previously conducted postdoctoral research in the Bee Lab at Harvey Mudd College under Matina Donaldson-Matasci. Currently leads a research group at Saint Mary’s College focused on honey bee communication and conservation.
