Amro Zayed is a Full Professor and York Research Chair in Genomics at York University's Department of Biology. His research focuses on the genetics, evolution, and behavior of social insects, particularly honey bees and bumblebees. He leads the Zayed Lab, which investigates social insect genomics, conservation of pollinators, and the molecular basis of social behavior.
Education: PhD in Biology (York University, 2006), Postdoctoral Fellowships at the University of Illinois (2006-2009). Academic awards include the Governor General’s Gold Medal (2007) and the Early Researcher Award (2010). His lab collaborates with the BEEc consortium for bee ecology and conservation.
Research interests span social insect genomics, population genomics of native pollinators, and developing genomic tools to improve honey bee health. Recent work includes studies on neonicotinoid impacts, Africanized honey bee genetics, and coral resilience.
Key publications include work on bumblebee conservation genomics, honey bee immune genetics, and stressor exposure biomarkers. His lab supports postdoctoral and graduate training, with current members specializing in transcriptomics, microbiome analysis, and ecological genomics.
