Dr Moray Stark is an Honorary Fellow in the Department of Chemistry at the University of York, specializing in chemical safety, chemical education, and lubricant research. His roles include former Safety Adviser for the Department (until 2020), Chair of the University Chemical Safety Forum (2012–2016), and Chemistry Department Disabilities Contact (2019–2020). He holds professional certifications such as Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and Chartered Chemist status.
His research focuses on improving laboratory safety through studies on chemical spillage causes and mitigation strategies. Notable contributions include demonstrating that personal factors account for only ~6% of spillage incidents, advocating organizational over individual accountability. He also pioneered randomized controlled trials showing verbal feedback reduces student spills. His lubricant research, supported by industry partnerships, aims to enhance engine efficiency and reduce environmental impact through 14 supervised PhD students.
Recent publications emphasize chemical education interventions (2023), spillage causation (2020), and lubricant oxidation mechanisms (2019). Awards include HEA Senior Fellowship (2016) and GradIOSH (2019).
