Monte L. Thies

Dr. Monte L. Thies is a Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Sam Houston State University. He holds a PhD in Ecology and Mammalogy from Oklahoma State University.

Research Focus

Current investigations include:

• Field studies of West Nile Virus, Dengue Fever, and Chagas' Disease along Texas-Mexico border
• Establishment of Sam Houston Disease Vector Program with BSL2 Diagnostic Laboratory
• Ecological studies of Mexican free-tailed bats including molecular systematics, pesticide impacts, and roosting behavior

He has conducted small mammal surveys for Texas Army National Guard sites.

Applied Research

Dr. Thies applies vertebrate anatomy and environmental toxicology to forensic studies, including development of identification tools for Texas mammals using electron microscopy.
