Monique van Genderen is a Professor and Chair in the Department of Visual Arts at the University of California San Diego (UCSD). She holds an MFA from the California Institute of the Arts (1991) and a BFA from UCSD (1987). Her work explores abstract painting, installation art, and themes of humanism, spatial dynamics, and historical references. Notable solo exhibitions include Afterimages (2021, Vielmetter Los Angeles) and Belief in Giants (2018, Miles McEnery Gallery).
Her research interests span abstract expressionism, contemporary art theory, and the intersection of painting with architecture and public space. Awards include the Chiaro Award (2019), a Federal Courthouse Art Commission (2018), and recognition in the Castellón International Painting Prize (2006).
