Monika Weiss is a Professor of Art and Affiliate Faculty in the Performing Arts Department at the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts, Washington University in St. Louis. She is also part of the Smithsonian Institution Archives of American Art since 2023. Her interdisciplinary practice spans sculpture, sound composition, performance, and film, addressing environmental and societal trauma through ancient lamentation rituals. Weiss’s work includes large-scale installations like Metamorphosis (Przemiana) (2024), acquired by the Centre of Polish Sculpture, and Nirbhaya, a public monument against gender-based violence planned for New York City’s Dag Hammarskjold Plaza.
Education: MFA from the Academy of Fine Arts, Warsaw, and a diploma from Warsaw School of Music. She was part of the Planetary Collegium (2007–2008) at the University of Plymouth, UK.
Research focuses on trauma, memory, and intersectional feminist perspectives, often collaborating with historians and curators. Key exhibitions include solo shows at the Museum of Memory & Human Rights (Chile), Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum (Miami), and the Centre of Contemporary Art Ujazdowski Castle (Warsaw). Her works have been featured in Art in America, Sculpture Magazine, and The New York Times.
Awards include the 2023 New York State Council on the Arts Fellowship and 2009 New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship. She frequently exhibits with HyphenHub and the Streaming Museum.
