Monika Streule

Monika Streule is a Research Fellow at the Latin America and Caribbean Centre and Department of Geography & Environment at the London School of Economics (LSE). Her work focuses on urbanization processes, socio-spatial theories, and post/decolonial methodologies. She holds a PhD from ETH Zürich and has conducted postdoctoral research at UCL, HafenCity University Hamburg, and CUJAE (Cuba). Currently leading the Marie Skłodowska-Curie-funded project on decolonizing ecology in Mexico City and La Paz/El Alto, her research examines socio-territorial conflicts over urban infrastructure and environmental justice.

Research Interests: Urban extractivism, comparative urbanism, critical cartography, indigenous urban movements, socio-territorial conflicts, and decentered urban theory. Her methodological innovations include collaborative mapping workshops and dialogical ethnography with marginalized communities.

Key Contributions: Authored Ethnography of Urban Territories (2018), co-edited Vocabularies for an Urbanising Planet (2023), and publishes in leading journals like Progress in Human Geography and Urban Geography. Her work bridges academic-practice through participatory research with Latin American urban communities.

Grants & Awards: Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowship (2020-2024), multiple conference organization roles including RSA Latin America and Iberoforum thematic dossiers. Active in global urban studies networks like the Decolonial Cities Collective.

Teaching & Engagement: Teaches urban research methods, global urban theory, and postcolonial urbanism. Leads workshops on critical cartography and decolonizing methodologies. Publicly engages through lectures on FIFA World Cup urban projects and far-right spatial politics.
