Monika Lewinska

Monika Lewinska is an Assistant Professor at the Biotech Research & Innovation Centre (BRIC) within the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences at the University of Copenhagen. She is affiliated with the Andersen Group where she serves as a Guest Researcher. Her research focuses on the intersection of metabolic disorders and liver cancer development.

Education:

• PhD in Molecular Biology from the University of Ljubljana (2014)
• MSc Eng in Biotechnology from Gdansk University of Technology (2010)

Dr. Lewinska's research interests center on metabolic syndrome, metabolomics, and liver diseases, with a specific focus on how metabolic syndrome contributes to primary liver cancer development and affects the tumor microenvironment. Her work bridges molecular biology, cancer research, and metabolic disorders, exploring the complex interplay between obesity, fatty liver disease, and cancer progression. She has published extensively on cholangiocarcinoma mechanisms, particularly examining how metabolic alterations influence cancer stemness and tumor progression.

Her publication record shows a strong emphasis on metabolic drivers of liver cancer, with recent work examining fatty acid metabolism, fibroblast-tumor interactions, and molecular signaling pathways in cholangiocarcinoma. These studies often involve international collaborations across multiple institutions in Europe and the United States.

Dr. Lewinska has built her career through diverse international experiences including positions at Harvard University, University of Iowa, and University of Ljubljana before joining the University of Copenhagen.
