Dr. Monika Hediger Niessen is a Senior Research Assistant and Lecturer at the University of Zurich, Department of Molecular Life Sciences (DMLS), within the group of Prof. Konrad Basler. She has been organizing and teaching practical courses in the module BIO111/117 'Classical and Molecular Genetics' since 2006.
Education:
- CAS in University Didactics (Hochschuldidaktik), University of Zurich (2017-2020)
- Ph.D. in Evolutionary Genetics, University of Zurich (1992-1998) - Thesis: 'Sex and chromosomes in the housefly'
- Master studies in Cytology, Zoological Institute, University of Zurich (1990-1991) - Thesis: 'Male fertility in Drosophila subobscura depending on different structural type combinations'
- Bachelor studies in Biology, University of Zurich (1986-1990)
Research Interests: Dr. Niessen's work spans molecular genetics and classical genetics, with a particular focus on sex determination mechanisms and evolutionary genetics. Her early research investigated sex chromosomes in houseflies, and she has since applied this expertise to genetics education and course development.
Teaching Experience: Since 2006, she has been a lecturer for the BIO111/117 module, and has served as teaching assistant and co-organizer for various genetics and cytology courses at the University of Zurich since 1992.
