Monika Fischer

Monika Fischer is a Teaching Professor of German in the Department of German at the University of Missouri’s College of Arts and Science. She also serves as Director of the Digital Global Studies Certificate and holds affiliations with the Center for the Digital Globe (CDiG), Peace Studies, the Honors College, the Council of International Initiatives (CII), and the College of A&S Study Abroad Scholarship (SAEL). Her research focuses on global/transnational studies, human rights, and narratives of citizenship, with special attention to digital storytelling and oral cultures.

Her research explores the impact of globalization on Sub-Saharan Africa, Middle Eastern geopolitics, and Islam in Europe. She has conducted fieldwork in Mongolia, Turkey, Senegal, Jordan, Ghana, and Costa Rica, emphasizing experiential education and collaborations with NGOs. Her work integrates digital tools to analyze storytelling’s role in shaping identities and cultures.

Teaching emphasizes interdisciplinary global topics, including courses on digital technology in globalization, multicultural case studies, folktales in a global context, and German literature/culture.

Affiliated with CDiG, she oversees the undergraduate certificate in Digital Global Studies, fostering digital methods for global inquiry.
