Monika Baar is a Full-time Professor in the Department of History and holds a Joint Chair at the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies at the European University Institute (EUI). She also serves as Dean of Graduate Studies. Her academic journey includes degrees from Eötvös Loránd University, Central European University, and Oxford University, where she completed her doctorate in 2002. She has held fellowships at institutions such as the Max Planck Institute and the University of Edinburgh.
Research Focus: Her work spans transnational history, Cold War studies, and disability history. Notable projects include the ERC-funded 'Rethinking Disability' initiative, exploring the global impact of the International Year of Disabled Persons (1981). She has also contributed to animal studies through her article on historical human-animal relations.
Awards: Recipient of the 3rd European Award for Excellence in Teaching (2014). Current research includes a textbook on Disability and History and a co-edited volume on Disability Studies.
Grants & Leadership: Principal investigator for the NWO-funded 'Disability and Self-Governance' project. Supervised over a dozen doctoral students, including notable advisees like Chiara Lacroix and Denys Tereshchenko.
