Monica Vetter

Monica Vetter is Professor and Chair of the Department of Neurobiology at the University of Utah and holds an additional adjunct appointment in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences. Her research program couples molecular developmental biology with neurodegeneration, using the vertebrate retina as an accessible window into the central nervous system.

Research Interests

Dr Vetter’s laboratory pursues two interlocking themes. First, they dissect how chromatin-remodeling factors, in particular the Polycomb Repressive Complex 2 (PRC2) subunits such as Ezh2 and Suz12, govern retinal progenitor proliferation, fate specification and the precise timing of neuronal differentiation. Second, they interrogate the contributions of microglia—the resident immune sentinels of the CNS—to both normal retinal maturation and to the progressive neurodegeneration seen in glaucoma.

Publication Trajectory

From 2005 to 2016 Dr Vetter’s group produced a steady stream of high-impact papers that collectively map transcriptional and epigenetic control of retinal cell genesis onto mechanisms of axonal survival and microglial activation in glaucoma. The work spans Xenopus developmental genetics, mouse glaucoma models, and translational gene-therapy approaches.
