Monica Massari serves as Associate Professor of General Sociology at the University of Milan within the Department of International, Legal and Historical-Political Studies, where she lectures on Sociology of Memory, Global Society and Rights and Comparative Social Systems.
Her research critically examines forced migration across the Mediterranean Sea, exploitation mechanisms affecting migrants in Europe, and the gendered dimensions of migration experiences. She investigates how social otherness is constructed through institutional practices and media representations, with particular attention to evolving forms of racism and discrimination in contemporary societies. Her work bridges theoretical sociology with actionable insights for migration policy and human rights frameworks.
Massari coordinates the University of Milan's research unit for the HORIZON2020 project "ITHACA-Interconnecting Histories and Archives for Migrant Agency: Entangled Narratives Across Europe and the Mediterranean Region" and leads the PRIN-2020 Project "MOBS – Mobilities, solidarities and imaginaries across the borders" (2022-2025). She also serves as Scientific Supervisor for the HORIZON Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions project "MEMODIAS. Memory Practices of the Afghan and Somali Diasporas in the USA and Italy". Additionally, she oversees the "Integration and acceptance of children and families of foreign origins" initiative at Human Hall, contributing to practical interventions in social inclusion.
