Dr. Monica Evans is an Associate Professor at the Harry W. Bass Jr. School of Arts, Humanities, and Technology at the University of Texas at Dallas. She directs the Narrative Systems Research Lab, working at the intersection of game design, development, production, game studies, narrative systems, serious games, educational games, and science fiction studies.
Dr. Evans obtained her Ph.D. in Arts and Humanities from UT Dallas in 2007, M.A. in Arts & Technology from UT Dallas in 2004, and B.A. in Plan II Honors and English Honors from the University of Texas at Austin in 2002. Her current work includes the ASPIRE Mentoring Grant project 'Conversations with Solo Female and Non-Binary Game Developers' (2022-2023).
Her research explores:
- Representation and diversity in game development
- Narrative systems and interactive storytelling
- Science fiction as a framework for game design
- Time mechanics as expressive tools
Dr. Evans' publications consistently examine how game mechanics convey complex themes like hope, complicity, and information stewardship. Her work demonstrates a strong focus on narrative innovation and inclusive design practices.
She has received significant recognition including INFORMS Franz Edelman Laureate, finalist for EURO Excellence in Practice Award and INFORMS Innovative Applications in Analytics Award, and prizewinner of INFORMS Revenue Management and Pricing Practice Award.
Dr. Evans serves on the editorial board of Central Michigan University Press and advisory boards for the Video Game Cultures International Conference. She maintains affiliations with the International Game Developers Association and previously served on the Steering Group for Video Game Cultures (Cyberhub, Interdisciplinary.Net).
