Monica E. Neugebauer is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Wisconsin–Madison and holds an affiliate appointment in the Department of Chemistry. She leads a multidisciplinary research group focused on discovering and evolving enzymes—especially metalloenzymes—for applications in biocatalysis and chemical biology.

Research Interests
The Neugebauer laboratory integrates biochemistry, structural biology, protein engineering, and directed evolution to uncover and optimize enzymes capable of performing challenging chemical transformations. A major focus is on metalloenzymes that carry out C–H functionalization and halogenation reactions using earth-abundant metals. By solving high-resolution enzyme structures and applying phage-assisted continuous evolution, the group aims both to create practical biocatalytic tools and to elucidate fundamental principles of enzyme selectivity.
