Monica Bergman serves as an Assistant Professor in Cognitive Neuroscience at the University of Skövde's School of Bioscience, where she maintains an active research program examining the relationship between traumatic experiences and dream content. Her office is located in Room G1250 and she can be contacted at monica.bergman@his.se or by phone at 0500-448815.
Her educational background includes a Master of Philosophy in Theoretical Philosophy and a Bachelor of Philosophy in Cognitive Neuroscience, with doctoral studies currently ongoing at the University of Turku. Bergman also serves as Program Manager for the Cognitive Neuroscience - Neuropsychology and Consciousness Studies program (180 credits).
Bergman's research primarily focuses on how traumatic negative events manifest in subsequent dreaming, utilizing Threat Simulation Theory (TST) as her theoretical framework. Her work spans natural disasters like the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami, historical traumas such as Holocaust survivor experiences, and fundamental cognitive function studies. She examines how threat simulation operates in dreams following traumatic events and how these patterns evolve over time in affected individuals.
Her publication record shows a consistent trajectory from foundational cognitive function research through to sophisticated trauma-dream analyses, with recent work demonstrating methodological rigor in studying dream content across diverse traumatic contexts. Bergman has established herself as a specialist in applying quantitative dream analysis to understand psychological trauma processing.
Currently, Bergman leads the long-term project 'Dreaming after trauma' (January 2019 - December 2027) which aims to assess how traumatic events affect subsequent dreaming. She previously completed the 'Well being in Post COVID-19 in Sweden' research project (June 2021 - December 2023) examining mental well-being in individuals with and without post-COVID conditions.
