Monica A. Longmore is a Professor of Sociology and Director of Graduate Studies at Bowling Green State University's Department of Sociology, within the College of Arts & Sciences. She earned her PhD in Sociology from Washington State University (1991), MA from the University of New Hampshire, and BS from Oregon State University. Her research focuses on social psychology and family relations, particularly self-concept development, adolescent behavior, and intimate partner violence. She leads the Toledo Adolescent Relationships Study (TARS), a longitudinal research project examining youth relationships and societal impacts.
Her work bridges social structures and individual psychology, exploring how relationships (e.g., peer groups, family backgrounds) shape mental health outcomes like self-esteem and depression. Notable contributions include studies on how adverse childhood experiences influence adult violence, pandemic-era social distancing compliance, and the role of relationships in sexual and fertility decisions.
Dr. Longmore’s research also addresses criminological topics, such as the intergenerational effects of parental incarceration and desistance from criminal behavior. She frequently collaborates on projects funded by organizations like the Department of Justice, emphasizing policy-relevant insights.
