Mona Phillips, Ph.D., is a Professor of Sociology and Anthropology at Spelman College, where she has served as faculty since 1985. She holds the role of Co-Chair of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology and coordinates the Ida B. Wells-Barnett/Social Justice Distinguished Lecture and Performance Series, as well as the First-Year Interdisciplinary Big Question Seminars.
- Education: B.A. from Spelman College (1976), M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor.
Dr. Phillips’ research focuses on the social contexts of Black women's health, particularly psychosocial stressors during pregnancy, and pedagogical practices in higher education. Her work has been cited in projects addressing teaching and learning best practices.
She has served as Principal Investigator and Co-Principal Investigator for NIH/CHD ethnographic research projects and contributed to edited volumes on sociology and pedagogy.
- Scientific Awards: Pew-Carnegie Scholar (Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching).
Dr. Phillips previously directed the Teaching Resource and Research Center at Spelman College for five years.
