Kathleen Phillips Lewis, Ph.D., serves as Division Chair for the Humanities and Associate Professor of History at Spelman College. She has held significant leadership roles including two terms as Chair of the Department of History (2003-2006, 2010-2016), Director of the African Diaspora and the World Program (2001-2004), and Faculty Representative on the Board of Trustees (2016-2018).
Her educational background includes:
- Ph.D. and M.A. in History from University of Manitoba (1st Class distinction; focus: Victorian England, British Empire, Caribbean economic history)
- B.A. with honors in History (minor in Economics) from University of the West Indies, St. Augustine
Dr. Phillips Lewis's research centers on Caribbean historical dynamics, examining British imperial economic impacts, storytelling traditions among women of African descent, and Caribbean American diaspora formation. Her interdisciplinary approach bridges economic history, gender studies, and cultural anthropology, with Food Studies emerging as a secondary academic focus through institutional appointment.
