Molly McPhee is a Lecturer in Theatre and Performance at Goldsmiths, University of London and Co-Director of the MA Applied Theatre: Drama in Educational, Community and Social Contexts. She holds a PhD from the University of Melbourne, an MFA from California Institute of the Arts, and a BA from Pomona College.
Her interdisciplinary research explores theatre's role in challenging carceral systems through sensory atmospheres, with foci on: theatre in prisons/at-risk communities; health education practices; and sensory performance archives. She bridges applied theatre with carceral geography, abolitionist theory, and atmospheric studies.
McPhee's publications consistently examine carceral society through performance, analyzing themes of resistance, contagion, and sensory intervention across international contexts. Her current projects investigate theatres as civic health spaces during pandemics.
Awards include:
- Clore Foundation Emerging Cultural Leader Fellowship (2014)
- Fulbright Grant (2003)
She co-founded research networks on prisons and arts/health, supervises doctoral students, and serves as Public Engagement representative. Professional work includes dramaturgy at the Royal Court Theatre and archival curation for Fuel Theatre.
