Mollie Stone serves as Choral Conductor and Lecturer at the University of Chicago, directing the University Chorus and Women's Ensemble. She additionally co-founded and directs the Chicago World Music Chorus and Augsburg/Twin Cities Global Harmony Choir while teaching internationally with Village Harmony.
Her academic credentials include a BA from Amherst College, MM in conducting from Westminster Choir College, DMA in choral conducting from Northwestern University, and studies at the University of Cape Town.
Stone's research centers on the adaptation of choral traditions for social transformation, particularly examining how Black South Africans repurposed anti-apartheid struggle music to address HIV/AIDS. Her work bridges ethnomusicology and social justice through authentic oral tradition transmission, emphasizing collaboration with cultural tradition bearers to preserve integrity while tackling contemporary issues like health crises and cultural preservation.
She secured a Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation grant in 2001 to produce the educational DVD "Vela Vela" for authentic Black South African choral instruction. No graduate students are publicly documented under her advisement.
Stone leads multiple ensembles including the University Chorus, Women's Ensemble, Chicago World Music Chorus, and Augsburg/Twin Cities Global Harmony Choir, creating platforms for cross-cultural musical exchange where tradition bearers maintain control over their cultural presentation.
