Dr. Mojgan Rastegar is a Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Medical Genetics at the Max Rady College of Medicine, University of Manitoba. She is also a Research Scientist at the Children’s Hospital Research Institute of Manitoba (CHRIM), Co-Director of the Manitoba Epigenetic Network, and Vice-President of the Canadian Society for Molecular Biosciences (CSMB). Her research is supported by CIHR and NSERC, and she actively mentors PhD, Master's, and postdoctoral trainees.
- PhD in Biomedical Sciences, Université Catholique de Louvain, Belgium (2000)
- DEA in Biochemistry & Human Cellular Biology, Université Catholique de Louvain, Belgium (1998)
- Postdoctoral training at McGill University, Hospital for Sick Children (Toronto), and Indiana University
Dr. Rastegar’s research centers on epigenetic regulation in brain development and neurodevelopmental disorders, with a focus on DNA methylation and the MeCP2 protein, particularly its isoforms MeCP2E1 and MeCP2E2. Her lab investigates how disruptions in these mechanisms contribute to Rett syndrome, autism spectrum disorders (ASD), and fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD). Using stem cell models, transgenic mice, and human post-mortem brain tissues, her work integrates developmental biology, molecular neuroscience, and multi-omics to uncover fundamental mechanisms and develop potential therapies.
Although specific article titles are not listed in the provided text, her body of work spans epigenetics, gene regulation, stem cell differentiation, and neurodevelopmental disease mechanisms, supported by continuous funding from CIHR, NSERC, and other national and international agencies. Her research has significant translational potential for currently incurable neurological conditions.
Dr. Rastegar has received numerous accolades, including the 2023 University of Manitoba Merit Award and multiple ORSA Research Awards. She serves on editorial boards of journals such as Scientific Reports, Frontiers in Genetics, and Neural Plasticity, and on national review panels including CIHR’s Stem Cell Oversight Committee.
She has mentored over 90 trainees at various levels and continues to lead an active research program with current grants from NSERC (Discovery Grant 2024–2029) and CIHR (Project Grant 2023–2028). She also holds leadership roles in professional organizations and serves on multiple CSMB committees.
Dr. Rastegar is a key figure in the Manitoba Epigenetic Network and leads a multidisciplinary lab focused on bridging basic science with clinical applications in neurodevelopmental disorders.
