Moira A. McDermott is an Associate Teaching Professor in the Department of Mathematics at Syracuse University, part of the College of Arts & Sciences. She holds a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Michigan (1996), with a thesis on tight closure theory in elliptic curves. Her research focuses on commutative algebra, including topics like test ideals, Hilbert-Kunz functions, and closure operations.
Teaching responsibilities include courses such as Applied Linear Algebra (MAT 532), Calculus I (MAT 295), and Introduction to Abstract Mathematics (MAT 375). She has consistently taught these courses across multiple semesters since at least 2020.
Active in academic service, McDermott serves on committees such as the University Placement Exam Committee, Faculty Advisory Council for the Center for Disability Resources, and the University Senate’s Computing Services Committee. She also contributes to initiatives like Project Advance Summer Institute and the Welcome to WiSE 1st Year Workshop.
