Dr. Mohammed H. Moghadasian serves as Professor in the Department of Food and Human Nutritional Sciences at the University of Manitoba and Principal Investigator at the Canadian Centre for Agri-Food Research in Health and Medicine (CCARM). With over 100 publications and 70+ conference presentations, he pioneers research on functional foods for cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and metabolic disorders.
Educational background:
- DVM from Shiraz University, Iran
- M.Sc. in Pharmacology & Therapeutics from University of British Columbia
- Ph.D. in Pathology & Laboratory Medicine from University of British Columbia
His laboratory investigates phytosterols, flaxseed, fish oil, Saskatoon berry, sea buckthorn berry, and wild rice using experimental animal models. Key projects include developing cardiovascular-healthy burgers, studying dietary agents in heart transplant patients, and elucidating mechanisms of lipid-lowering effects. Research bridges nutrition science and pathology through lipid analysis, western blotting, RT-PCR, and immuno-histochemistry.
Major awards:
- Centrum Foundation New Scientist Award
- Margaret Becklake Award
- CIHR Young Investigator Award
- University of Manitoba Students Teacher Recognition Award (2006)
Dr. Moghadasian has trained numerous postdoctoral fellows, graduate, and undergraduate students while providing pathological services to St. Boniface Hospital Research collaborators. His CCARM laboratory utilizes advanced animal models of hypercholesterolemia and heart attack to study functional food mechanisms.
