Mohammed Gulrez is a Professor in Translational Physiology and Director of the Centre for Nutraceuticals at the School of Life Sciences, University of Westminster. His work bridges scientific research with practical applications in health and wellbeing through nutraceuticals. He leads a research team focused on innovative approaches to improve human health through science-based product development and validation.
His educational background includes:
- Pharmacy degree (undergraduate)
- MSc in Drug Delivery from UCL School of Pharmacy
- PhD in Diabetes and Metabolic Medicine from Queen Mary, University of London
Professor Gulrez's research spans formulation science, drug/bioactive delivery, iron metabolism, obesity, type 2 diabetes, satiety, and neurodegeneration. His work focuses on developing nutraceuticals, functional foods, and supplements with scientifically validated benefits. He has a strong emphasis on collaborative research between academia and industry, promoting knowledge exchange and research translation to real-world applications.
His recent publications show a strong focus on oxidative stress, neuroprotection, and liver health, with particular emphasis on curcumin and iron interactions. His work increasingly incorporates nanotechnology for targeted delivery of bioactive compounds, with applications in Parkinson's disease, diabetes, and liver conditions. The research demonstrates a clear translational pathway from laboratory findings to product development.
Professor Gulrez has secured research funding from diverse sources:
- UK government (Innovate UK)
- Charities (Society for Endocrinology)
- International grants (Indonesian government LPDP)
- International grants (Nigerian government TETFund)
He leads a research team of doctoral scholars, research associates, and research assistants. His knowledge exchange projects include a Knowledge Transfer Partnership that developed the UK's top-selling liquid iron supplement now marketed in 40+ countries. He actively supervises PhD students and encourages undergraduate and postgraduate research projects in his areas of expertise.
As Director of the Centre for Nutraceuticals, Professor Gulrez oversees initiatives aimed at becoming a globally recognized source of credible, scientifically validated information on nutraceuticals.
