Mohammed Ballal is an Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery at the UWA Medical School, University of Western Australia. His research focuses on surgical oncology, gastrointestinal surgery, and bariatric procedures, with particular emphasis on enhancing postoperative recovery and optimizing surgical techniques. He contributes to the UN Sustainable Development Goals through advancements in medical care and patient outcomes.
Research interests include pancreatic surgery, immunotherapy in gastrointestinal tumors, and the gut microbiome’s role in metabolic health post-bariatric interventions. He has published on topics such as laparoscopic bile duct exploration, fluid therapy optimization, and Yttrium-90 radiation therapy for liver resection.
Ballal leads two major grants: 'Mapping the care pathway of new patients with suspected upper GI cancer' (2018–2020) and a National Heart Foundation-funded study on muscle mass preservation post-sleeve gastrectomy (2018–2022). His work often involves collaborative efforts with institutions like the Department of Health (WA) and the National Heart Foundation.
