Mohammed Ait Lahcen is an Economist at the International Monetary Fund (IMF)'s African Department. Previously, he held an academic position as an Assistant Professor of Economics at Qatar University's Department of Finance and Economics and served as a Research Fellow at the University of Basel's Economic Theory Group. He earned his PhD in Economics from the University of Basel in 2019 and conducted postdoctoral research at Washington University in St. Louis.

His research focuses on macroeconomics and monetary economics, particularly exploring topics like inflation tax effects, financial inclusion, labor market frictions, and the implications of informality and dollarization. Key awards include the Young Researchers’ prize at the 2020 Economics of Informality conference. His research also involves computational methods, including Python-based numerical simulations of economic models like the neoclassical growth model.
