Mohammad Elahinia

Dr. Mohammad Elahinia serves as Dean of the College of Engineering and University Distinguished Professor at The University of Toledo, appointed Dean in March 2025 after serving as Interim Dean and Chair of the Mechanical, Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering Department. He has been a faculty member since 2004.

His educational background includes an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Villanova University (2001) and a Ph.D. from Virginia Tech (2004).

Dr. Elahinia's research focuses on smart material systems and advanced manufacturing, particularly additive manufacturing of shape memory alloys (NiTi/NiTiHf) for aerospace and biomedical applications. His work emphasizes Process-Microstructure-Performance relationships through Laser Powder Bed Fusion, Binder Jetting, and Direct Energy Deposition techniques.

His scientific recognition includes:

He has supervised nearly 70 graduate students and mentored over a dozen postdocs, with research consistently funded by NSF, DoD, DoE, and NASA. As director of the Dynamic and Smart Systems Laboratory, he provides hands-on research training for over 100 students since 2006 in additive manufacturing and shape memory alloys.
