Sayed M. Saghaian is an Associate Teaching Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT), within the Armour College of Engineering. He holds a Ph.D. (2015) and B.S. (2010) in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Kentucky.
His research expertise focuses on Solid Mechanics and Materials Engineering, particularly in the development and characterization of shape memory alloys (SMAs). Key areas include high-temperature NiTiHf-based SMAs, additive manufacturing processes for these alloys, and their mechanical behavior under various conditions. He investigates topics such as phase transformations, microstructural evolution, and material properties through experimental and computational methods.
Dr. Saghaian is affiliated with professional organizations including the Society of Plastic Engineers (SPE), the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), and the Minerals, Metals and Material Society (TMS). His work has been published in journals like Acta Materialia, Smart Materials and Structures, and Materials & Design, with a focus on advancing SMA applications in aerospace, biomedical, and engineering systems.
His recent publications (2023–2013) explore additive manufacturing techniques for porous SMAs, mechanical behavior under indentation, and the effects of composition/processing on alloy properties. He has contributed a chapter to the book Shape Memory Alloy Actuators: Design, Fabrication and Experimental Evaluation (2016).
